After a long awards season, on Sunday in Hollywood we finally found out that the motion picture academy loved The Hurt Locker a lot more than James Cameron's hit sci-fi epic Avatar: The Iraq war drama prevailed to win best picture, best director and best original screenplay, as well as three other awards, for a total of six Oscars.
Avatar, meanwhile, nabbed three Oscars in technical categories—best visual effects, best cinematography and best art direction—but lost out to Hurt Locker in the big categories. Both were nominated for nine awards.
The South African sci-fi film District 9, meanwhile, was shut out of the awards entirely, despite four nominations, including one for best picture.
Disney/Pixar's 3-D animated Up lost out in the best-picture category but won Oscars for best animated feature film and best original music score (by Michael Giacchino). Meanwhile, Star Trek snatched best makeup, the first Oscar for a Trek movie (see accompanying story).
